The sulfate reduction rate was measured for almost four years in the profundal sediments of Lake Kizaki, a mesotrophic lake in central Japan. The rate was generally highest in the surface layer and decreased with depth. Seasonally, sulfate reduction tended to be high in spring and summer, and then to decrease until the end of stratification (December) in spite of a constant in situ temperature of around 6 °C, although fluctuations were found in every year. The rate also fluctuated greatly according to year. The maximum rate of sulfate reduction was 0.33 mmol m−2 d−1 in May, 1990, and the minimum was 0.004 mmol m−2 d−1 in March, 1993. These relatively low rates, compared with those reported for freshwater sediments, seem to be due to low concentrations of sulfate in the sediments (5–23 μmol l−1 in the surface layer). The rate was highly correlated with the concentration of sulfate in the sediments. The addition of sulfate stimulated sulfate reduction in all sediment samples tested, but adding lactate did not. Therefore, sulfate reduction should be limited mainly by the supply of sulfate. Measurements of sulfate reduction rates at different concentrations of added sulfate revealed a low concentration of half-saturation constant as low as 12 μmol l−1.  相似文献

Studies of the relative importance of various phytoplankton size classes (pico-, nano-, micro-, and macro-) during thermal stratification at oligomesotrophic Mountain Lake, Giles County, Virginia were conducted from March through October 1994. A detailed time- and depth-series study was conducted to compare 14C-fixation rates in these phytoplankton size fractions. Data indicated that on average the microplankton were the most important size class in cell number and cell volume and contributed 95% of the total primary productivity. The picoplankton ranked second in importance constituting 5% of total primary productivity, whereas the relatively small numbers of nano- and macroplankton contributed little primary productivity. No obvious relationships were apparent among cell densities, cell volumes, and chlorophyll a values during late summer thermal stratification, possibly due to shifts in community structure at that time. The findings contrast with many other oligo- to mesotrophic ecosystems where the pico- and nanoplankton have demonstrated significantly greater importance, especially in summer.  相似文献

The material for pigment analysis was collected 1–3 times a year from Lake Peipsi-Pihkva in 1983, 1987, 1988, 1991 and 1992–1995. Concentrations of chlorophyll a, b and c (Chla, Chlb, Chlc), pheopigment (Pheo) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) were measured biweekly in 1985–1986. The mean of all Chla values was 20.2 mg m–1 (median 13.3 mg m–1) indicating the eutrophic state of the lake. Average Chlb, Chlc, Pheo and carotenoid (Car) contents were 3.7 mg m–3, 4.1 mg m–3, 3.0 mg m–3 and 4.8 mg m–3, respectively. The average Chlb/Chla ratio was 22.9%, Chlc/Chla 23.4%, Pheo/Chla 38%, Car/Chla 37% and ATP/Chla 3%, the medians being 14.3, 13.6, 17.5, 39.4 and 1.9%, respectively. The proportion of Chla in phytoplankton biomass was 0.41%, median 0.32%. There were no significant differences in temperature, oxygen concentration, Chla, and ATP between the surface and bottom water; the lake was polymictic during the vegetation period. The Chla concentration had its first peak in May followed by a decrease in June and July. In late summer Chla increased again achieving its seasonal maximum in late autumn. The ATP concentration was the highest during spring and early summer, decreasing drastically in autumn together with the decline of primary production. ATP/Chla was the highest during the clear water period in June and early July, which coincided also with the high proportion of Chla in phytoplankton biomass. The highest Chla occurred in November (average 37.2 mg m–3) when Secchi transparency was the lowest (1.05 m). Concentrations of Chlb, Chlc and carotenoids were the highest in August, that of Pheo in June. Concentrations of Chla and other pigments were the lowest in the northern part of Lake Peipsi (mean 14.7 mg m–3, median 12.5 mg m–3) and the highest in the southern part of Lake Pihkva (mean 47.9 mg m–3, median 16.3 mg m–3). An increase of Chla and decrease of Secchi depth could be noticed in 1983–1988, while in 1988–1994 the tendency was opposite.  相似文献

Stratigraphy of cladoceran remains in the upper 18 cm of a sediment core from the Lake Černé was studied. The successive disappearance of Bosmina longispina, Daphnia longispina and Ceriodaphnia quadrangula from the upper layers of the sediment corresponds with our knowledge concerning the disappearance of these species from the open water.  相似文献

Recent eutrophication histories of three shallow lakes (mean depths <3 m) were studied using palaeolimnological methods. Freeze-cores were dated using 210Pb, 137Cs, 134Cs and 241Am. Resultant chronologies were problematical at two sites (Væng Sø and Vesterborg Sø) due to sediment-water interface mixing, indicated by uniform 137Cs profiles over the surface 20–30 cm. Sediments at Langesø and Vesterborg Sø have a high carbonate content, which together with the high mixing rate have resulted in diatom dissolution below 30 cm at Vesterborg Sø. Diatom stratigraphy indicates relatively small biological changes at both Væng Sø and Langesø both lakes have been eutrophic for at least the last 150–200 years. Væng Sø is dominated by planktonic diatoms together with high percentages of benthic Fragilaria spp., and Langesø by planktonic diatoms, especially Cyclostephanos dubius and Stephanodiscus parvus.Epilimnetic phosphorus concentrations were inferred using weighted averaging; at Væng Sø the diatom-inferred TP (DI-TP) concentrations were close to observed values in the early 1980s, but failed to record the post-biomanipulation decrease to 55 g l-1 after 1988, presumably due to the smoothing of the sediment record by resuspension and mixing. At Langesø two increases in DI-TP suggest a two-phase enrichment of the lake, initial eutrophication 1880, and hypertrophy after 1950. The recent DI-TP values are lower than the annual observed values, and reasons for this are discussed. Despite problems associated with sediment mixing, the sediment records of these shallow systems can still be used for monitoring and for environmental reconstructions.  相似文献

A new species of Boeckella from limnetic samples of Laguna del Diamante, a high lake in the Andes (34°10 S) is described and illustrated. The species is defined by the characters of the male fifth leg: the right two segmented endopod bears four peculiar, short, claw-like spines, the left endopod is a simple finger-like projection. This species is related to B. gibbosa, also a species from the Andes and B. vallentini from Malvinas (Falkland Islands) and other subantarctic islands. It is distinguished from them by diagnostic features of the fifth legs of the male and abdominal structure and fifth legs of the female. Some current views on the features used in the taxonomy of the genus Boeckella are discussed.  相似文献

Three protocols for the determination of inorganic and organic sulfur fractions were tested for their suitability to estimate total indigenous organic sulfur (Sorg) and35Sorg formed from added35SO4 2– in sediments of chemically dilute lakes in the ELA. The protocols tested have all been reported in the literature. It was found that two protocols involving sequential analyses for S fractions following acid treatment gave estimates of both Sorg and35Sorg up to 87% lower than a non-sequential protocol. The low estimates were largely due to hydrolysis and solubilization of solid phase S which was then removed in a rinsing step. The non-sequential protocol, in which total reduced inorganic sulfur and total sulfur were determined on separate aliquots, is recommended as the most reliable of the three. Individual analyses in this protocol were verified for these lake sediments using a variety of S standards.  相似文献

Bacteria can play an important role in the process of anaerobic phosphorus release: they can act as a direct source of orthophosphates, or as a catalyst of iron hydroxyde reduction. We studied their influence on phosphorus release from highly organic sediments of a Canadian shield lake. Phosphorus and iron release were measured under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, with or without sterilization, and at different pH. We measured also the abundance and activity of bacteria in sediments. The increased P release after sterilization can be explained by cell lysis. Compared to sterilization, changing oxygen concentrations or acidification had little or no effect on P release. In these sediments, phosphorus and iron movements were independent. Vertical distribution of planktonic rotifers is described in relation to temperature and oxygen in Lake La Cruz, a single-doline, closed karstic lake (121 m diameter and 25 m maximum depth) which shows iron meromixis. Samples were taken by peristaltic pumping at 10 cm depth intervals in the oxycline zone from June 1987 to September 1988. A model of rotifer vertical structure in stratified lakes is proposed. Rotifers concentrate their populations at the depths with intense gradients. As stratification develops some rotifer populations show a downward migration following the thermocline and some others show an upward migration following the oxycline. The production-respiration balance in the lake, and so the position of the oxycline with respect to the thermocline and the layer of maximum production, depends on meteorological conditions. A shift in the dominance of congeneric or related species can occur in consecutive years. In Lake La Cruz, mixing conditions and subterranean inflow in spring were much more intense in 1988 than 1987, and the distance between production and decomposition depths was smaller in 1988. Anuraeopsis miraclei, an oxycline-bound species with high abundance in 1987, was displaced by A. fissa in 1988. A. fissa, which was a metalimnetic species during early summer, reached peak densities (3 × 104 ind l–1) at the oxycline, equaling the abundance of A. miraclei the preceeding year.  相似文献

Phytoplankton biomass, morphological and taxonomic composition, species diversity and productivity were analyzed in a shallow lake of the Middle Paraná River floodplain (El Tigre, 31 ° 41 S and 60° 42 W), between November 1986 and July 1988. Lake inundation (filling and through-flow phases) constituted an intense long-term perturbation in the physical and chemical environment. As the lake filled with river water, K-selected species (netplanktonic filamentous bluegreens, > 37 µm, with low surface area/volume (SA/V) ratios) that had existed prior to filling (late spring 1986) were replaced in summer-fall by r-selected species (nannoplanktonic chlorophytes and cryptophytes, < 37 µm, mainly stout forms with high SA/V ratios). During the through-flow phase, lentic phytoplankton was replaced by lotic flagellate populations due to the direct flushing by river water. During the period of falling water (drainage and isolation phases), nanoplanktonic algae with similar characteristics to those of the filling phase dominated in late winter-spring. Later in the isolation phase, these were succeeded by K-selected species (netplanktonic algae, mainly motile spherical dinoflagellates and filamentous bluegreens with low SA/V ratios). Simultaneously, primary production per unit biomass decreased and total biomass and specific diversity increased. Seasonal changes of phytoplankton in floodplain lakes can be interpreted as the interaction between true successional development (as observed in the drainage and isolation phases) and intermediate disturbance. Using Reynolds' terminology, short-term disturbance (slight inflow of nutrient-rich river water) caused reversion to an earlier stage in the former succession, and long-term disturbance (lake inundation) truncated the successional progression and a new (or shifted) succession was initiated.  相似文献
